How Parents Strengthen a Child's Education

How Parents Impact a Child's Choices

Parents play a vital role in the academic progress of their children. Regardless of the school choice they have made, whether public schooling, home education, or private schooling, parents play a crucial role in shaping their child's academic future.

A report posted on the National Education Association (NEA) website states that, "Students with involved parents, no matter what their income or background, are more likely to earn higher grades and test scores, enroll in higher-level programs, be promoted, pass their classes and earn credits, and attend school regularly." In short, the NEA says, "When parents are involved in their children's education, kids do better in school."

The authors of a Harvard Family Research Project publication released in the spring of 2007 say that "the academic encouragement parents provide is more powerful than the support provided by friends."

They continue by stating that "parental encouragement and concrete help in managing homework supports adolescents' learning, helping them to complete homework more accurately, so that when they study on their own, they can do so with fewer problem behaviors."

Report after report reveals just how essential the role of a parent in a child's life really is. In addition to promoting academic success, the relationship that parents share with their children positively affects a child’s health and development as well as his or her life choices.
